COURSE OUTCOME

At the end of this course, the incumbent will be able to:     

  1. Remembering: Exhibit memory of previously learned material by recalling facts, terms, basic concepts, and answers.
    Describe the various aspects, parameters, scales of experimental tools and design to conduct the experiments in the laboratory.
  2. Understanding: Demonstrate understanding of facts and ideas by organizing, comparing, translating, interpreting, giving descriptions, and stating main ideas.
    Analyze the methods of experiments and interpret the output results. Emphasis on the limitations of theoretical concepts, measuring instruments to perform the experiments and deviation of results from ideal one.
  3. Applying: Solve problems to new situations by applying acquired knowledge, facts, techniques and rules in a different way.
    Apply the knowledge in current research works and publications in various journals and literature of the subjects in different fields adopted by the students as per course curriculum.
  4. Analyzing: Examine and break information into parts by identifying motives or causes. Make inferences and find evidence to support generalizations.
    Describe how the ideas those are adopted can be implemented through projects and demonstrate various models, recent project proposals to execute the knowledge adopted from the course.
  5. Evaluating: Present and defend opinions by making judgments about information, validity of ideas, or quality of work based on a set of criteria.
    Define how the ideas can be share with the multi - disciplinary personals. Lighten on the latest and modern developments in the fields.
  6. Creating: Compile information together in a different way by combining elements in a new pattern or proposing alternative solutions.
    At last students should compile all the knowledge those they acquired from the course and apply to industry, academia, and research keeping in the mind about ethical awareness and impact in the field of environmental (pollution), social (legal) and safety.

 

PREREQUISITES

To understand this course, the incumbent must have idea of:

·         Preliminary Knowledge of Different Measuring Instruments (e.g., Vernier Scale, Screw Gauge), Experimental ideas 10 + 2 Level Experiments, Verifications of Theoretical understanding through elementary mechanical, electrical, optical and thermal experiments. Data Acquisition, Accuracy and Error Analysis.

 

SYLLABI

Group 1: Experiments of Higher Secondary Knowledge of Physics

1.       Determination of Thermal Conductivity of a Good Conductor by Searle’s Method

2.       Determination of Thermal Conductivity of a bad Conductor by Lees and Chorlton’s Method

3.       Determination of dispersive power of the material of given prism

4.       Use of Carry Foster’s bridge to determine unknown resistance

Group 2: Experiments on General Properties of Matter

5.       Determination of Young’s modulus by Flexure method and calculation of bending moment and shear force at a point on the beam.

6.       Determination of rigidity modulus by static/dynamic method

7.       Determination of co-efficient of viscosity by Poiseulle’s capillary flow method

Group 3: Experiments on Optics

8.       Determination of wavelength of light by Newton’s Ring method

9.       Determination of wavelength of light by Fresnel’s bi prism method

10.    Determination of wavelength of light by Laser Diffraction method.

11.    Determination of numerical aperture and energy loss related to optical fiber experiment.

a)       A candidate is required to perform at least 3 experiments taking from each group. Initiative should be taken so that most of the experiments are covered in college in the distribution mentioned above. Emphasis should be given on the error in the taken data.

b)       In addition a student should perform one or more experiments where he /she will have to convert the non electrical signal present in an experiment into electrical signal and measure them with the help of multimeter  oscilloscope Student should calibrated the sensor for experiment before use.

c)       Innovative experiments: One more experiment should be designed by student or the concerned teacher or both.

Note:

(i.)     Failure to perform each experiment mentioned in b] and c] should be compensated by two experiments from two different groups mentioned in the above list.

(ii.)   At the end of the semester report should sent to the board of studies regarding experiments, actually performed by the college, mentioned in b] and c]

(iii.) Experiment in b] and c] can be coupled and can be parts of a single experiment.
